SOIL pH AND LIMING

چکیده

When crops do not grow well, one of the first question an agronomist is likely to ask is “What is the pH of the soil?” The reason for this question is that soil pH tells us more about a soils ability to produce crops that any other single measurement. A measurement of soil pH is like a doctor’s measurement of a patient’s temperature. It gives an indication something may or may not be wrong, but it does not tell the exact nature of the trouble.

Effect of liming on soil properties, yield and nutrient uptake by wheat

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of liming on chemical properties of wheat field soils and yield of wheat in Ranisankail soil series of Bangladesh. There were eight treatments of liming material applied from dolomite (CaCO3.MgCO3). Yield and yield components of wheat were recorded at harvest and the grain and straw were analyzed for P, S, Ca and Mg contents. The post harvest soils ...

INFLUENCE OF SOURCE AND PARTICLE SIZE ON AGRICULTURAL LIMESTONE EFFICIENCY AT INCREASING SOIL pH

INTRODUCTION Excessive soil acidity is known to have potential negative impacts on crop production. The chemical and physical characteristics of a liming material determine its capacity to neutralize soil acidity. The calcium carbonate (CaCO3) equivalent (CCE) and estimates of particle size impact on the efficiency at increase soil pH are considered when assessing a material’s liming value. The...

Development of soil pH and lime requirement maps using on-the-go soil sensors

Since conventional sampling and laboratory soil analysis do not provide a cost effective capability to obtain georeferenced measurements with adequate frequency, different onthe-go sensing techniques have been attempted. One such recently commercialized sensing system combines mapping of soil electrical conductivity and pH. The concept of direct measurement of soil pH has allowed for a substant...

Controlling factors of environmental flooding, soil pH and Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.) root weevil feeding in citrus: Larval survival and larval growth

The underlying influences of soil flooding, pH level and soil-inhabiting Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.) root weevil larval feeding in citrus were examined in two separate greenhouse studies, rootstock flooding Diaprepes-larvae (RFD) and liming rootstock flooding Diaprepes-larvae (LRFD). Our objectives were to determine the combined effects of soil flooding and pH level on survival and growth of Dia...

Soil acidification and the importance of liming agricultural soils with particular reference to the United Kingdom

Soil acidification is caused by a number of factors including acidic precipitation and the deposition from the atmosphere of acidifying gases or particles, such as sulphur dioxide, ammonia and nitric acid. The most important causes of soil acidification on agricultural land, however, are the application of ammonium-based fertilizers and urea, elemental S fertilizer and the growth of legumes. Ac...

Interaction of soil pH and phosphorus efficacy: Long-term effects of P fertilizer and lime applications on wheat, barley, and sugar beet

Phosphorus (P), a plant macronutrient, must be adequately supplied for crop growth. In Germany, many soils are high in plant-available P; specifically in arable farming, P fertilizer application has been reduced or even omitted in the last decade. Therefore, it is important to understand how long these soils can support sustainable crop production, and what concentrations of soil P are required...
